"As my practice has evolved over the past 28 years, learning to trust the therapeutic field has strengthened my secure base as I hold the space for the explorers. I have come to appreciate that when we experience what may be described as 'resistance', uncertainty or feeling stuck, our embodied responses, relational experiences and the therapeutic field itself may offer valuable information waiting to be heard."
— Dr Elaine Grech (2026)
• Have you ever found yourself feeling stuck in a session—perhaps frozen, emotionally triggered or uncertain how best to position yourself—while asking yourself, "What shall I say or do next?"
• Would you like to explore practical ways of using embodied awareness, creativity, spatial positioning and relational exploration to discover new therapeutic possibilities when feeling stuck?
• How might exploring different ways of positioning ourselves within the therapeutic field strengthen our secure base and deepen our understanding of what is unfolding while accompanying a client, couple, family, group or team?
This workshop offers opportunities for personal and professional growth within a trauma-informed, experiential and collaborative learning environment.
Who is this workshop for?
This experiential training workshop welcomes psychotherapists, psychologists, counsellors, social workers, psychiatrists, family therapists, occupational therapists, guidance professionals, educators, child and youth care workers, supervisors, managers and other practitioners who wish to deepen their capacity to understand complex therapeutic processes through experiential, relational and trauma-informed ways of working.
Whether you work therapeutically, educationally, within organisations or in multidisciplinary teams, this workshop aims to strengthen your secure base while navigating uncertainty through embodied awareness, relational curiosity and compassion.
Participants are warmly invited to bring current therapeutic, supervisory, educational or organisational situations they would like to reflect upon, as therapeutic positioning will be explored through real and lived practice experiences.
About the Workshop
There are moments in our work when our usual ways of understanding no longer seem enough. We may find ourselves feeling confused, emotionally activated and overwhelmed to the extent that we might even wish the explorer did not turn up for the session altogether, as we have no idea how best to position ourselves therapeutically. Rather than trying to push these uncomfortable experiences away prematurely, this workshop invites us to become curious about what may lie beneath them and what they might be inviting us to notice about the person, ourselves, the therapeutic relationship and the wider therapeutic field.
This experiential workshop offers practical, trauma-informed ways of exploring complex therapeutic processes through embodied, relational and creative experiential invitations. Rather than searching for immediate answers, participants will be encouraged to slow down, notice, reflect and explore multiple possibilities, allowing new understandings to emerge through experience.
Drawing on trauma-informed practice, Gestalt psychotherapy, systemic thinking, attachment theory, insights from systemic constellations, expressive arts, embodied awareness and other experiential approaches, participants will have opportunities to learn, experience and practise a range of therapeutic invitations that can be thoughtfully adapted to their own professional contexts.
Throughout the day, participants may choose to explore these experiential invitations through their own personal and professional experience, a current client, couple, family, group, supervisory, educational or organisational context, or a combination of these, according to what feels most relevant and appropriate.
Together we will explore practical ways of working with embodied awareness, relational patterns, spatial positioning, symbolism and creative exploration as experiential invitations that may help us understand what is unfolding when words alone do not seem enough. Throughout the workshop we will remain guided by trauma-informed principles of safety, choice, collaboration, pacing and respect.
My Reflection
Throughout my years as a psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer, some of the most meaningful learning has emerged from moments when I was shaken to the core, at times not immediately understanding what was happening. Over time I came to recognise that if I am to continue growing as a reflexive practitioner, I need to move beyond the urge to rush towards answers or push discomfort away. Instead, I have learned to become curious about these moments and to ask what they might be inviting me to notice about myself, the therapeutic relationship and the wider therapeutic field.
This workshop reflects my continuing journey of integrating trauma-informed practice, Gestalt psychotherapy, systemic thinking, attachment theory, insights from systemic constellations, expressive arts and embodied awareness into ways of working that honour complexity without rushing towards certainty. My vision is to create, together with you, a reflective and experiential learning space where stuckness is welcomed as an invitation from the field to deepen awareness.
Inspired by John Byng-Hall's concept of the secure base (1995), I have come to appreciate that, by strengthening our own secure base, we become more able to improvise attuned therapeutic repositioning, opening new possibilities for movement within the therapeutic field. This compassionate practice honours our own ongoing personal and professional growth as we accompany those who entrust us with their stories, while remaining open to the new possibilities that can emerge within the therapeutic field.
