What We Build, What We Protect
brings together two American traditions of craftsmanship and courage: the artistry of Italian American stone carvers who shaped the buildings and monuments of a nation, and the everyday bravery of the firefighters who protect the cities those craftsmen built.
This special evening, hosted by the Natural Stone Foundation (NSF) in partnership with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), honors FDNY Chief of Department John M. Esposito for his decades of service and leadership. The evening takes place roughly a month after the 25th anniversary of September 11th, a fitting moment to reflect on the sacrifices firefighters make and the communities they protect.
The evening draws inspiration from the legacy of the Piccirilli Brothers, Italian immigrant stone carvers whose work shaped some of New York's and the nation's most iconic landmarks and monuments. Their story is one of skill, heritage, and building things meant to last, values that resonate deeply with the FDNY's own tradition of service and protection.
Guests will enjoy a formal dinner and an evening of tribute, featuring a special musical performance by Italian baritone and pianist Raffaello Bellavista, traveling from Italy for the occasion.
Proceeds from this event will benefit both the Natural Stone Foundation and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, supporting their respective missions of philanthropic giving within the natural stone industry and honoring the memory of firefighters who have given their lives in the line of duty.
