About this Event
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Join artist Cristelle Cabrera in a special ceramics workshop as she guides participants through the process of creating figurines inspired by the Chimú culture of the northern coast of Peru, particularly its sculptural traditions and representations of human and animal forms. Learn basic hand-building techniques to sculpt bodies out of terracotta clay, then attach limbs and carve facial features with your own personalised designs.
Sculptures will be kept at Bankstown Arts Centre at the end of the workshop to dry and be fired in the kiln. Participants will be notified via email when their sculptures are ready to be collected.
This workshop has a maximum capacity of 12 participants.
Date and time: Saturday 21 November, 2:30-4pm
Location: Bankstown Arts Centre, Studio 2
Ages: 18+
Cost: $7 + booking fee
ABOUT WHAT REMAINS
This workshop marks the closing of What Remains at Bankstown Arts Centre, an exhibition exploring the human instinct to immortalise the ephemeral nature of memory, identity and family histories.
For Cabrera, Chimú figures are a vessel for ancestral memory and cultural inheritance. However, rather than attempting to replicate Chimú objects, she fragments, enlarges and transforms their visual language, allowing the figures to become embodiments of her own experience as a Peruvian Australian artist navigating questions of identity, displacement and belonging.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Cristelle Cabrera is a Peruvian Australian artist who weaves memory, identity, and belonging through her ceramics. Each vessel becomes a fragment of ancestry – stories pressed into clay, echoing migration and resilience. Cabrera transforms her work into a complex relationship with her cultural identity, creating a raw representation of her constant anxiety around belonging while carrying the realities of hardship through spiritual acceptance. Her process combines slow, hand-built techniques with ritualistic repetition, making both labour and storytelling central to her practice.
Cabrera was selected as a finalist for the Burwood Art Prize in 2024, 2025, and 2026. She has also exhibited at Starla Gallery in Western Australia, Good Space Gallery in Chippendale, and NAS Gallery in Darlinghurst. She is currently undertaking her Honours degree at the National Art School, with the support of the Max Baxter Scholarship.
