About this Event
Kin Museum of Contemporary Art is one of the northernmost art museums in the world, located in Giron/Kiruna 200 km north of the arctic circle, on the Swedish side of Sápmi, the homeland of the Sámi people, and also the location of the world’s largest underground mine, LKAB. It is a place where the climate crisis is highly palpable. In this presentation, director Maria Lind will discuss what it might mean to “dig where you stand”, inspired by the eponymous book about citizen research from 1978 by writer Sven Lindquist, interweaving the local, regional, national and international. Aiming at being “the generous edge”, i e working with the most complex and sophisticated art in generous ways, the museum is art-centric while embracing multiple forms of mediation and collaboration, following three loose thematic lines in its programming: The Critical Zone; Hand, Heart and Brain; and Women in the North. At the core of this is Sámi artists and duojarat, craftspeople. Lind will also discuss how Kin's collection is growing through acquisitions connected to its program.
Speaker Bio:
Maria Lind is a curator, writer and educator from Stockholm, currently director at Kin Museum of Contemporary Art, Giron/Kiruna. She was counsellor of culture at Sweden’s embassy in Moscow (2020–2023), director of Tensta konsthall (2011–2018), Bard College’s curatorial program (2008–2010), Iaspis (2005–2007), Kunstverein München (2002–2004), and co-curator of Manifesta 2 (1998). She curated the 11th Gwangju Biennale (2016), Future Light, Vienna Biennale (2015), and co-curated the 2019 Art Encounters Biennial in Timisoara. In 2009 she received the Walter Hopps Award.
