About this Event
Between 1938 and 1959 Ealing Studios led by Michael Balcon produced some 95 films exploring various genres. But ask most film fans today about Ealing Studios and the most likely response is: "You mean Ealing comedies?" Ealing made around 20 comedies but most critical attention has been focused on just six films, three from 1949, two from 1951 and one from 1955.
In this event we want to look at some of the other comedies and also some of the dramas and melodramas. Our complete feature will be (1939) a musical comedy featuring Betty Driver, Sonnie Hale and Jimmy O'Dea.
Ealing is one of the few British studios (there were once over 40 film studios in the UK) that has a brand still remembered by at least some filmgoers. That also means that debates about Ealing are also important in the history of British cinema. This event will therefore link Ealing to some of the main debates in British film scholarship over the last eighty years.
Tea and coffee will be available, for a small donation, and you are welcome to bring your own lunch.
Tickets are available online and on the door but due to limited places, please let us know if you are planning to buy your ticket on the door.
