A day to think, discuss and strategize for collective action
About this Event

The Trinity Branch of the Climate Justice Universities Union is delighted to host an in-person meeting on the future of the university, in collaboration with the Trinity College Dublin Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

This in-person meeting is open to all who work in, study at, and care about the Higher Education sector across the island of Ireland. It offers an ideal opportunity for members of the Union and those who are not yet members to come together in person to get to know each other and to do some planning together for collective action. A priority for the Union is increasing connectivity amongst the motivated colleagues on the island of Ireland, so we can mobilise together to address the most pressing issues we face – such as university funding, resisting AI and Big Tech, and the need to address increasing precarity amongst students and early career researchers. At the meeting, there will be opportunity to think about, discuss, and plan what we should demand from governments and institutions to put the Higher Education sector on firmer financial grounds while protecting it from demands that contradict climate justice principles.

The meeting begins at 10:00 and ends at 16:00, with breaks for coffee and lunch (provided) and takes place in Trinity’s Arts Building. During the morning session, we will discuss with invited speakers issues related to increasing pressure for “dual use” and defense-related research as well as the changing Research Ireland and European funding landscape. In the afternoon, participants can self-select into break-out groups to work together on the issues of particular interest to them (e.g., resisting AI and Big Tech, precarity, education, sustainable food, education for sustainability and climate justice, etc).

Further details of the schedule, speakers, and event location will be shared with registrants in due course.

We look forward to welcoming you at Trinity on December 7th.
