“We bury the dead. Hasn’t it always been done that way in this country?” Well, yes and no. Europeans in 18th-century America generally did bury their deceased loved ones, but what was the proper way to do that? What about criminals, the poor, or the enslaved? If we look at history closely, we find that other things could happen. What “other things?” Do you really want to know? Come hear Dr. Anne Marie Martin explain as she shares her research on death and burial practices in early America, using 18th-century Charleston, SC, as an example. Dr. Anne Marie Martin earned a B. A. in history and education at Clemson University, M.L.I.S. at the University of SC, M.A. in history at Sam Houston State Univ., and Ph.D. in history from the University of Arkansas. She is currently an Associate Professor of History at Catawba College, here in Salisbury, NC, and an active member of the Board of Directors for Rowan Museum.
