Your Topic:
What can neuroscientific measures tell us about the built environment?
Understanding how you visualise, perceive and feel about a room or new build is crucial to the design process, and is often subconscious in nature. To date research has predominantly focused on our subjective experiences. However, in recent years neuroscientific measures have taken the research into more controlled ‘real time’ settings.
In this talk Dr Sacha DeVelle will discuss findings that use eye tracking, physiological responses and fMRI scans to measure our reactions to a range of built environment settings. She will also raise some interesting questions around this interdisciplinary research known as neuroarchitecture. For example, is this the right definition - and what are we really measuring?

Your Speaker:

Dr Sacha DeVelle is an interior designer with a background in educational neuroscience and language processing. She studied at the University of Queensland and then worked overseas for a number of years in Latin America, East Africa and at Cambridge University (UK) before starting her own consultancy in London. In May 2013 she received the UQ Vice Chancellor Equity and Diversity Highly Commended award recognising her contribution to children’s education in Africa. She was the Australian lead on an international early learning project for the OECD from 2016-2018 and has presented extensively in Australia and overseas. Her published work examines learning, language processing and educational neuroscience.

Today Sacha has a particular interest in how neuroscientific measures are contributing to the built environment and more specifically, how the lay person processes architectural and interior design settings.
