About this Event

Think of it as a marketplace of experiences, with some of your favorite LA artists and writers offering one-one-one interactions, in exchange for a secret or a song. (Other forms of non-governmental currency also accepted.)

A few things you’ll find:

- A Flower Machine

- Venn Diagrams for your existential crisis

- Flash Embroidery

- A Confrontational Sandwich Bar

and more!

What will happen? How will it feel? Will you fall in love?

̄ \_(ツ)_/ ̄

(But maybe.)

What does it have to do with the book?

What a Time to be Alive is a year in the life of Lola Treasure Gold. It is about nighttime in LA and how we commodify grief and how it feels when your friends get famous and the modern-day guru circuit and love and music and why we believe in the things we believe in. It’s also about how money is not the only currency and how anything might change the direction of your life.

You’ll see.

Join us!

For all other interactions, please bring something to trade. It can be a favorite object, a found token, a piece of gossip, an original and irrefutable theory, a hat, etc.

And here’s a few nice words from people who care about books:

LA Times: “[E]qual parts love letter to Los Angeles, narrative about being a first-generation Asian American, exploration of grief and love and a found-family novel. . . . [Chang’s] prose is infectiously funny, and her ability to satirize rich people paying silly amounts of money to be led to their souls has only sharpened.”

NY Times: “Chang raises poignant questions about how to be authentic in the internet age, and how much of yourself you’re willing to commodify. . . . What a time to be alive, sharing this human experience — and to be a reader.”

Kirkus Reviews: “Nails the emotional contradiction, absurdities, and cathartic surprises of modern life.”
