The next regular Westbourne Woods walk will be on Sunday 8 November, departing the gates of the Royal Canberra Golf Club at 9.30am. The guide will be Richard Hart.
The theme for the walk will be 'Conifers in Canberra’.
Richard is a Canberra-based forester employed in the private sector and involved in advisory and consultancy work in Australia and its near neighbours to individuals, companies and governments on commercial forests and revegetation projects.
Conifers have traditionally contributed most of the wood used by the worlds processing industries. The appointment of Charles Weston in 1914 as the ACT Forester, and the establishment of the trial plantings in the Woods is one of the first examples of organised plantation forestry in Australia (two years before the
establishment of the NSW Forestry Commission in 1916).
Weston established a wide range of northern hemisphere conifers from Europe, Asia and North America to determine which species were best for the region. These have been widely planted throughout the city, with one species forming the basis for our
current plantation forest industry.
Richard will point out the range of conifers planted within Westbourne Woods and talk about their uses and contribution of these trial plantings to Canberra, the national forest industry and the general landscape.
The walk takes about 2 hours & is a leisurely stroll through the Woods with a knowledgeable guide.
