About this Event
The post-covid West End is being transformed by a wide range of new developments, placemaking, greening and street improvements. This is a heartening story of the capital’s long term resilience and how it is adapting to changing retail, social and economic circumstances.
The tour will start at St Giles Quarter - the West End's first new-build office tower in over 50 years, 180,000 sq ft of Grade-A office space across 19 storeys. Deborah Saunt of DSDHA will be our guide. We’ll look at Covent Garden and Shaftesbury Capital’s placemaking improvements.
The Acre, the retrofit of a Richard Seifert building will be described by Gensler’s Harry Cliffe Roberts. We’ll hear about the National Gallery’s Project Domani, the conversion of Admiralty Arch into a hotel and the retrofitting of New Zealand House by The Crown Estate with Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands and Donald Insall Associates guided by Kristy Lansdown Managing Director, Urban-Development at The Crown Estate.
David Ainswoth of CO_RE will guide us to Lansdowne House by AHMM and Angelo Carusone of Landsec will describe Thirty High at Bressenden Place, a retrofit by Buckley Gray Yeoman. At 105 Victoria Street architects KPF will describe the 470,000 sq ft mixed-use development including an urban farm, a sports arena and auditorium, and extensive terraces.
We’ll look at the The Chancery Rosewood in Eero Saarinan’s former US Embassy by David Chipperfield Architects and the new landscaping in Grosvenor Square commissioned by Grosvenor and designed by Tonkin Liu, as well as the South Molton Triangle by Hopkins Architects for Grosvenor and Mitsui Fudosan.
We’ll drive up to Baker Street to Derwent London’s 25 Baker Street by Hopkins Architects before meeting up with Matt Blades, Director of Built Environment at Oxford Street Development Corporation who will give us an update of plans to pedestrianise London’s premier high street which contains The Ribbon by ORMS, Elephant London by Studio PDP with Civic Engineers and the M Building by AHMM on the former Debenhams site. AHMM’s, Philip Turner will be our guide.
We will finish at Marble Arch and Portman Estate’s plans for its improvement
