About this Event
Ah, that commonly used wine term "terroir"; literally translated this means "land" or "territory". They say great wine is made in the vineyard, but what exactly makes a wine taste like the place it comes from?
This Thursday, we're exploring the art of terroir, that magical combination of soil, climate, geography and a little human know-how that gives a wine its unique sense of place.
We'll be traveling (by the glass, naturally) from the limestone soils of Burgundy to the rolling hills of Piedmont and the sun-drenched vineyards of southern France, with three fabulous wines that couldn't be more different and which give us a true example of the power of terroir.
On the tasting menu this week:
Maison Champy – Chablis, Burgundy, France
Chardonnay with a distinctly Burgundian accent! From the limestone-rich soils of Chablis, this is all about freshness, precision and minerality. Think crisp citrus, green apple and a lovely saline finish. A VERY different beast to California Chardonnay; same grape, different 'terroir'!
Poderi Aldo Conterno – "Il Favot" Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont, Italy
From one of Barolo's most celebrated winemaking families comes this gorgeous expression of Nebbiolo and a classic example of Piedmont's cool climate. Fragrant red cherries, rose petals and a touch of spice meet elegant tannins and vibrant acidity. A beautiful introduction to the grape that makes some of Italy's most revered wines.
Domaine Cazes – "Rolle in Stone" Vermentino, Southern France
Sunshine in a glass! Known locally as "Rolle", Vermentino thrives in the Mediterranean climate of southern France. Expect bright citrus, white flowers and a hint of Mediterranean herbs, with a refreshing mineral edge.
Three wines, three very different personalities, and a little lesson in why where a wine comes from matters just as much as what goes into it.
