What makes bourbon taste like bourbon? What happens when rye takes the lead? And what can more than a decade in barrel bring to the glass?
This Thursday, we’re swapping the corkscrew for the whiskey glass and exploring Bourbon, Rye & Time with three expressions from Pinhook.
Pinhook takes its name from “pinhooking”, the practice of buying a young thoroughbred and nurturing it in the hope that its potential develops over time. It’s an especially fitting philosophy for whiskey, where grain, oak and patience all play their part in shaping what eventually arrives in our glass.
We’ll be pouring:
Pinhook Sraight Bourbon
We’ll start with the cornerstone of American whiskey. Bourbon must be made from a mash bill of at least 51% corn, helping give the spirit its characteristic richness and sweetness. Pinhook’s Flagship Bourbon gives us our baseline: youthful and vibrant, with fruit, spice, sweetness and the influence of new American oak.
Pinhook Straight Rye
Next, we change the grain—and the personality changes with it. Rye whiskey puts rye at the heart of the mash bill, typically bringing a spicier, more savory and energetic character. Tasting the two Flagship expressions side-by-side gives us a brilliant opportunity to experience just how much difference the underlying grain can make.
Pinhook 11 year Bourbon
Finally, we add another ingredient: time. Pinhook’s Vertical Series follows selected whiskey stocks as they mature, releasing them at different ages to capture their evolution in barrel. At 11 years, we get to explore what extended maturation can bring to bourbon, and tasted alongside their straight Bourbon, just how dramatically time can change what’s in the glass.
