Think German wine means only sweet Riesling? Think again.
Germany makes some of the world’s most distinctive white wines, but for so many people, one word still tends to dominate the conversation: sweet.
This Thursday, we’re exploring a very different side of German wine through three bottles from Franken and the Mosel; wines driven by freshness, acidity, minerality and an incredible sense of place.
We’ll start completely outside the world of Riesling with Silvaner from Franken, before heading to the steep, slate-covered vineyards of the Mosel for two very different interpretations of Germany’s most famous grape.
We’ll be pouring:
Peter Leipold – Silvaner Kabinett Trocken, Franken
Beyond Riesling
Riesling may grab the headlines, but in Franken, Silvaner is one of the great regional specialties. Peter Leipold is part of an exciting generation bringing renewed attention to the region, producing beautifully expressive, terroir-driven wines. This is dry, fresh and wonderfully characterful Silvaner, and a great reminder that German white wine goes far beyond Riesling.
Stein – Riesling Blauschiefer Trocken, Mosel
The Dry Side of the Mosel
Now we head to the famous Mosel region, where Riesling and slate are practically inseparable. “Blauschiefer” (literally “blue slate” in English) puts that relationship front and center. Trocken means dry, and here the classic brightness and aromatic character of Riesling meet a leaner, mineral, beautifully refreshing style.
Weingut Hermann Ludes – “Thörnicher Ritsch” 2022, Mosel
Finding the Balance
Finally, we stay in the Mosel but change direction. The Ludes family has deep roots in Thörnich, working the steep slate slopes of the remarkable Thörnicher Ritsch vineyard. Here, a touch of natural sweetness meets the Mosel’s piercing acidity, creating that extraordinary tension and balance that great Riesling can achieve.
Three wines. Two regions. And three very good reasons to rethink German wine.
Because the real story isn't whether German wine is dry or sweet. It's the remarkable spectrum in between, and how brilliantly these wines can balance fruit, acidity, minerality and place.
