In French wine, sometimes all it takes is a few miles to go from a name everyone knows, to one you may never have tried, at a price you'll love.
This Thursday, we’re taking the road less travelled through France, exploring three wines that sit in and around some of the country’s most famous wine territory, but offer something distinctly their own (and some incredible value for money).
We’ll start in Chablis, head just down the road to the tiny appellation of Irancy, then travel west to Menetou-Salon in the Loire, a neighbor of considerably more famous Sancerre.
Three wines. Three discoveries. And a reminder that sometimes it pays to look just beyond the famous name.
Domaine Christophe & Fils – Petit Chablis
A different side of Chablis
We’ll begin somewhere familiar, but perhaps with a wine you don’t always reach for. Petit Chablis sits within the wider Chablis region but at higher elevation, outside its more celebrated village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards. Christophe & Fils gives us a bright, energetic expression of Chardonnay, full of the freshness and mineral character that makes this corner of northern Burgundy so distinctive.
Gabin & Félix Richoux – Irancy Rouge
Chablis’ red-wine neighbor
Travel a short distance southwest and white gives way to red. Irancy is a tiny Burgundy appellation devoted primarily to Pinot Noir, yet remains far less familiar than many of Burgundy’s famous red-wine villages. Gabin & Félix Richoux offer us a beautiful introduction: vibrant red fruit, freshness, earth and spice, with the elegance we love in cool-climate Pinot Noir.
Tracey & Cie – Menetou-Salon “Les Marnes”
Next door to Sancerre
Finally, we head west to the Loire and Menetou-Salon, sitting close to its considerably more famous neighbor, Sancerre. Sauvignon Blanc thrives here too, and “Les Marnes” gives us the chance to explore another expression of the grape: bright, mineral and wonderfully refreshing, but with an identity all its own.
Together, these three wines make a very good case for occasionally ignoring the most famous name on the map.
