About the speakers
Professor Robert Fitzgerald, PhD
Previously, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Education Strategy
Robert is currently an Adjunct Professor at Western Sydney University. Prior to that he was the inaugural Head of School of University of New South Wales (UNSW) recently established School of Professional Studies. In this role he was leading the co-design of new products and services across public sector leadership, defence and cyber security. At Charles Darwin University (CDU), he was the Pro Vice-Chancellor Education Strategy responsible for education strategy, online learning, accreditation and academic quality across both higher education and vocational education. It was in this role that he implemented a curriculum management system.
Dr Kathy Charles
Executive Dean of Learning and Teaching, Nottingham Trent University
Kathy is the Executive Dean for Learning and Teaching at NTU, where she oversees high-quality teaching culture, professional development, and teaching scholarship. She holds strategic roles in curriculum design across the university and serves on various leadership teams and committees, including as Deputy Chair of the Academic Standards and Quality Committee.
Starting at NTU in 2019 as Head of Academic Development, Kathy became Interim Executive Dean in 2020, the same year she completed her MBA in Educational Leadership, and was permanently appointed in 2021. An Aurora alumna and mentor, she earned her SFHEA in 2016. Previously, she was Associate Professor and Head of Psychology at Edinburgh Napier University, developing and leading new educational modules and courses, and worked as a tutor and research assistant at Glasgow Caledonian University.
Professor Jonathon Powles
Vice-President Student Success, CQUniversity Australia
With an impressive and lengthy academic career in both Australia and the United Kingdom, holding roles including Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning, Teaching and Students) at the University of West Scotland, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic Innovation) at the University of New England, Director of Teaching and Learning at the University of Canberra, and roles at the Australian National University including Director" of Education within the School of Music – to name a few – Professor Powles brings with him a wealth of expertise - and surprisingly, has found more commonalities than disparities between different institutions and regions in the higher education sector.
Professor Louise King
Chair of Academic Board and Director Educational Quality and Excellence, Charles Darwin University
Louise King is a Professor at Charles Darwin University, Australia, where she holds the Chair of the Academic Board and the position of Director of Educational Quality and Excellence. Her principal role is to promote and sustain the highest quality standards in curriculum design, teaching, learning and scholarship.
After an initial career in youth and community services, Louise’s academic leadership experience spans six universities and educational institutions across Australia and internationally. Dr King has an intricate knowledge of academic governance and an in-depth understanding and experience developing, establishing and managing quality assurance and enhancement systems based on best practice curricular, pedagogical and technological innovations.
