Utah is a strange place, and I mean that in the best possible way! For over twenty years, I've been collecting stories of ghosts, monsters, strange creatures, UFOs, and all sorts of things that go bump in the night. Along the way, I've collected more than 400 firsthand accounts of the strange and unusual, many of which have become part of my research into Utah's folklore. On Thursday, October 15th, I'll be joining the Weber County Library for Legends & Lore, where we'll be exploring some of the wonderfully weird stories that make Utah such a fascinating place! We'll be talking about everything from the legendary Utah Lake Monster and Bigfoot to mysterious flying manta rays, lizard men, shadow people, strange little gnomes, and even extraterrestrial visitors! But there's more to these stories than simply deciding whether something is real or imaginary. As a folklorist, I'm interested in where these stories come from, why people tell them, how they change over time, and what they tell us about the communities in which we live. Some of these accounts are funny, some are downright frightening, and others are so bizarre that you really have to wonder what people are experiencing!
So, if you enjoy a good ghost story, have an interest in the unexplained, or simply want to learn a little more about Utah's wonderfully strange folklore, come join me! We'll be at the Weber County Library's Main Auditorium in Ogden, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, at 2464 Jefferson Avenue. No booking is required. Bring your curiosity, your questions, and perhaps even a strange story of your own. I always enjoy hearing what people have experienced, and you never know what we might discover together!
