About the Authors:

Gustavo Flores received his M.A. in Applied Anthropology/Archaeology from San José State University in 2014. In addition to teaching anthropology courses at SJSU, he also teaches at Evergreen Valley College. He collaborates with the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe, and scholars from Santa Clara University, Foothill College, and from Stanford University to conduct archaeological research using primary sources to better understand the histories and experiences of Indigenous peoples in the Bay Area.

Lee Panich is the Fay Boyle Professor of Anthropology at Santa Clara University. In his research and teaching, he uses a combination of archaeological, ethnographic, and archival sources to examine the long-term interactions between California’s Indigenous societies and colonial institutions, particularly the Spanish mission system. He has conducted investigations of Native life at various colonial-era sites in the San Francisco Bay area, including Mission Santa Clara and Mission San José. On these projects, he has been fortunate to partner with members of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe, the Ohlone Indian Tribe, and other Native Californian communities.
