CANDYMAN
While researching the urban legends surrounding Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing project, graduate student Helen Lyle becomes fascinated by the story of Candyman — a vengeful spirit said to appear when his name is spoken five times into a mirror. Dismissing the tale as superstition, Helen sets out to uncover the truth behind the myth, only to find herself drawn into an increasingly terrifying world where belief, violence and the supernatural begin to blur.
Bernard Rose’s Candyman is a haunting and intelligent horror film that reaches far beyond its unforgettable central legend. With a commanding performance from Tony Todd and Philip Glass’s eerie, hypnotic score, it explores race, class, folklore and the power of stories to take on a life of their own. Beautifully atmospheric, unsettling and deeply tragic, it remains one of the most distinctive horror films of the 1990s.
