What can we learn about planetary well-being—and our responsibilities towards it—if plants become participants in the knowledge production that emerges from artistic inquiry and cultural work? How do we even create a space that brings together different ways of knowing (and by that we mean the entire multispecies ecosystem both plants and humans are part of) into sustained dialogue that generates insights that none could achieve alone? Perhaps responding to the biodiversity crisis requires us to rethink not only the very notion of nature, but humanity’s place within it. If the default setting is to overlook plants and their contribution to worldmaking, let us cultivate plant literacy as a way of subverting that default.
Titled 𝑾𝒂𝒚𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑮𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒊𝒏𝒈 / 𝑴𝒐𝒅𝒐𝒔 𝒅𝒆 𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒄𝒆𝒓, this exhibition is a culmination of Free Radicals, a two-year research project exploring the intersections between plant biodiversity and artistic practice. It brings together works of twenty artists, designers, creative practitioners and interdisciplinary researchers tracing their responses to situated ecological realities of the current European climate: from the expansion of eucalyptus monocultures in Portugal and forest loss in Armenia to the transformation of vernacular knowledge in Galicia's mountain communities. Throughout, they ask how to invite plants into artistic inquiry as co-creators of collective imagination rather than subjects of study or objects on display, while contributing to a broader conversation on the intersections between plant biodiversity and creative practice.
The exhibition will also mark a book launch of 𝑭𝒓𝒆𝒆 𝑹𝒂𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒔: 𝑨𝒕𝒕𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝑪𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑷𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒔, released in collaboration with Dutch publishing house Onomatopee. A collectively assembled toolkit—part manifesto, part gathering space—the publication is for everyone who seeks to engage more deeply with plants in their practice. It brings together the work of 70 artists, designers, researchers, curators, scientists, local knowledge holders, gardeners, and educators who cultivate slow, messy, and reciprocal modes of collaboration between people and plants. Through essays, interviews, poetry, reflections, and recipes, the work traverses material cultures, sound ecologies, visual arts, embodied knowledge, design-led methodologies, and grassroots campaigns—gathering and transmitting stories and encounters that reveal the inextricable role of plants in shaping our societies.
