About this Event
WvHs are an anarchic mix of drums, bodhrán, whistles, punk poetry, songs and beats. A sonic assault, their brand of electronic punk-folk energy tackles disappointment, inner-city crime, a fame-obsessed culture and social decay with a huge dollop of desperation, balanced by equal measures of anger and wit, creating a darkly humorous soundtrack to modern life.
The evening of Saturday 14 November will see the official Dublin launch and signings of Wasps vs Humans' new album and first vinyl pressing - The Day Homo Sapiens Destroyed the Earth, at Thomas House Dublin.
Wasps vs Humans will perform the album in its entirety, along with some well known tunes from previous recordings and live performances.
Recorded between Dublin and Cork, the album is the culmination of two years of gigging, capturing the raw energy of the live show in a harder, grittier yet more melodic sound. Heavy guitar riffs and thundering beats collide with harmonies, folk influences, whistles and bodhrán — though there’s not a trad song in sight!
At its core, the album is a darkly humorous take on humanity’s seemingly unstoppable pursuit of destroying itself and the planet. It’s doom, death, war and social decay viewed through the WvHs lens: angry, absurd, sarcastic and sometimes painfully close to the bone.
BANG BANG (You’re Dead) sets the tone. Childhood games of pretending to K*ll become PlayStation battles, drone warfare and adults playing war for real. My Country’s Like A Broken Pen turns its gaze towards a broken society, while Are You Having A Good Dream brings things closer to home, asking what happened to the hopes and dreams we once had. Death Chamber Visits confronts M**der and responsibility head-on: whoever pulls the trigger, M**der is M**der. And America is never far away — a culture where school shooting drills have become part of everyday life, yet remains unable to confront its obsession with guns. At the top of the pile sits the ultimate ode to America’s current president: God Is Not On Trump’s Side. No explanation needed. And beneath all the noise, anger and absurdity, Dead Volcanoes turns inward, touching on loss and those who didn’t make it through life’s fight.
Initially a solo project, WvHs’ punk poet/drummer Carl Antony Plover has opened for the likes of John Cooper Clarke, Whipping Boy and Mark E. Smith’s The Fall. He has released an album and single with ’80s avant-garde band 4,000,000 Telephones, receiving critical acclaim in the UK national press and airplay on John Peel’s BBC Radio show. Since joining forces with musician wife Linda Plover in 2024, WvHs have continued to expand their sound, with live shows that surge with intensity. Electronic beats fuse with distorted guitars; poems are screamed straight into your face, alongside post-punk hooks, making every set as confrontational as it is uncompromising and raw.
Joining Wasps vs Humans on the night are special guests, THEWLIS from Dublin.
The duo, named after renowned English actor David Thewlis, are Donegal native Danny McElhinney, and Dubliner Cormac Curtis. First playing together in the indie rock band, Mahogany Men in the nineties, they convened as Thewlis in the capital just before lockdown in 2020.
They have released eight singles to streaming services, are well-received by critics and have enjoyed enthusiastic radio play both at home and abroad; their musical style encompasses alternative rock, punk, folk, and dark-toned country.
