Strange Brew Presents
Wally Badarou (live)
+ ddwy (live)
+ Andy Payback (dj)
Friday 15th May
7pm - 10pm
Working with Grace Jones, James Brown, Black Uhuru, Tom Tom Club, Gwen Guthrie, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Quincy Jones, Sly & Robbie, Robert Palmer, Fela Kuti, Manu Dibango and Marianne Faithfull, an honourary member of British jazz funk band Level 42, and author of some hugely influential solo records, Badarou’s personality is intrinsically part of ’80s music, his characterful keyboard runs and dreamy pads running like a flawless seam through many huge hits of the era.
Whilst he never became a household name as a solo artist throughout the 80s-90s, Wally began garnering a higher profile in the 00s-10s thanks to the explosion of diggers culture, with many tastemaker DJs and record labels shining a light on his incredible work which has stood the test of time remarkably well. Tracks like 'Hi-Life', 'Chief Inspector' & 'Endless Race' are now all staples of many discerning record collections and widely regarded as timeless masterpieces. Elsewhere, his productions have spanned Afro, Reggae, Balearic, Disco, Funk, & even New Age.
Many Bristolians will recognise his 1984 classic 'Mambo', which was sampled heavily by Massive Attack seven years later in their renowned track 'Daydreaming' (1991).
Some other essential records where you'll hear Wally's distinctive playing or production work include:
M - ‘Pop Muzik’ (1979)
Grace Jones - Private Life (1980)
Level 42 - Starchild (1981)
Lizzy Mercier Descloux - Lady O K'Pele (1981)
Black Uhuru - Chill Out (1982)
Gwen Guthrie - It could Have Been You (1982)
Fela Kuti - Teacher Don’t Teach Me Nonsense (1986)
A rare chance to see such an incredible talent in Bristol - do not miss!
