Hosted by James C.Join Urban Sketchers Asheville for a day of sketching on one of downtown Asheville’s most charming streets! Bring your sketchbook and favorite supplies, and spend some time capturing the historic buildings, storefronts, architectural details, and lively downtown atmosphere.
A little history of Wall Street:
Wall Street is one of downtown Asheville’s distinctive historic streets. Originally, it wasn’t a fashionable shopping street at all. It was a narrow delivery alley serving the backs of commercial buildings. Its name comes from the stone retaining wall that supported the steep hillside above it. Until the mid-1920s, when Wall Street was paved and a sidewalk laid to span the alley, access to these second story doorways was by footbridge or cat walk. This is commemorated by the Cat Walk sculpture on the street, created by sculptor Vadim Bora. Besides the bronze cat, look for a rat and a mouse.
Meet at the iron sculpture at the intersection of Wall Street and Battery Park Avenue. Bring your sketchbook, drawing supplies, a stool if desired, and layers to keep warm! If it’s too cold or rainy to sketch outdoors comfortably, we’ll move to the Grove Arcade, where we can enjoy the beautiful architecture and sheltered indoor surroundings.
