About this Event
In 2008, Alex Allardyce titled his history of Newington Green: ‘The Village That Changed the World’. Hyperbole? Maybe! But this small corner of North-east London has certainly been home to some remarkable figures and events over the centuries.
Sitting on what is now the Islington/Hackney border at one time it was a place people came to so as NOT to be noticed – whether it was a Tudor King visiting his mistresses or religious and political dissenters concealing their views from the authorities.
Join me, Clerkenwell & Islington guide Andy Taylor, as we uncover the story of these ‘non-conformists’, from the mother of modern feminism to the birthplace of British punk rock and Madness’ Nutty Sound.
We’ll search for clues amongst the surrounding streets to see how the area has changed over time, looking for evidence of Tudor engineering, a lost place of worship, a remarkable series of houses, and dead music & film studios.
Hear about the 18th century philosophers, scientists and their links to the founding of the United States and the radical club that hosted Taylor Swift and Oasis!
