Explore the impact and legacy of the Greenpoint Oil Spill and Meeker Avenue Plume
About this Event

Join Newtown Creek Alliance for a walking tour through Greenpoint and East Williamsburg, tracing the footprint of one of the largest oil spills in U.S. history and the more recently designated Meeker Avenue Plume Superfund site. We'll walk the streets above these underground contamination sites, discussing how decades of industrial refining left millions of gallons of petroleum and toxic solvents beneath homes and businesses and what ongoing cleanup and community advocacy look like today.

Along the way we will visit sites tied to the spill's discovery and remediation, pass through residential and industrial blocks still affected by vapor intrusion testing, and discuss the connections between this contamination and Newtown Creek itself, a federally designated Superfund site itself.

This tour is free, space is limited. We ask that all attendees fill out a liability waiver and photo consent form prior to joining, found here.
