About this Event
This walk, led by Pete Smith, starts from the booking hall of Aldgate Underground Station (Circle and Metropolitan Lines), just outside the old City gate, and follows a route that would have been well known to Chaucer, who lived for a dozen years above the gatehouse. It uncovers traces of Whitechapel’s varied past, as well as signs of its vibrant present, including: a huge plague pit, two sticks and an apple, the Elephant Man, a philanthropist whose name was Mudd, a number of dark deeds, and quite a few heart-warming ones.
