About this Event

This event is being hosted by We Are Doc Women and The New Monday.

We Are Doc Women is a voluntary-run organisation that supports women film-makers who work in documentary and unscripted content across the UK.

The New Monday is a creative community based in Leeds that brings together individuals and organisations from across the industry to connect, collaborate and create.

The makers of "Still Pushing Pineapples" work for Labor Of Love Films.

Labor of Love Films have been located in the North of England since 2012. They are a small, female-led, predominantly documentary-making film company. They have won recognition both at home and abroad, and they specialise in culturally important feature documentaries, often featuring regional life stories with universal appeal.

They produce artistically edgy work, mainly financed by UK and U.S. funding bodies such as the BFI, DocSociety, Catapult Film Fund, ITVS (U.S.), Screen Yorkshire. Their films have been selected and won awards at A-list international film festivals such as: Locarno, BFI London FF, IDFA, True/False FF, Sheffield DocFest, Viennale, Berlinale, Edinburgh Int. FF just to name a few.

They’ve produced films for the leading U.K. and international television channels such as: BBC 4, BBC 2, BBC World, C4, PBS/POV, ARTE, NRK1, Discovery, Al Jazeera, WDR, A & E etc. They are also one of the few professional filmmaking companies based in York and play an active role in supporting the creative community and cultural life of the city.
Previously they made A Bunch of Amateurs, feature documentary supported by BFI/DocSoc, Screen Yorkshire, Catapult FF, Good Gravy Films which won nationwide acclaim and can be seen on BBC Storyville.

"Still Pushing Pineapples" follows former pop star Dene Michael as he clings to the remnants of fame he once had as a member of 1980s novelty pop group Black Lace.

The band’s universally known hit Agadoo – both beloved and hated by many, and the high or low point of any party – is what Dene’s best known for.

Now, performing for a dwindling, ageing audience in some of the UK’s most deprived seaside towns and cities, he’s eager to press on with his music career and get out from under the legacy of the Black Lace songbook.

STILL PUSHING PINEAPPLES follows Dene, his spirited 89-year-old mum Anne, and his sassy girlfriend Hayley across Britain and the Costa del Sol in this unmistakably British road movie.

En route they navigate love, family duty, and the relentless pursuit of one last chart success. But who needs an ’80s throwback in a loud pineapple shirt and oversized red specs, singing a tired earworm?

Apparently, many do (doo doo).
