Volume at Nash Place Projects
An installation and conversation with Randall Szott and Selene Colburn
Sunday, November 8th, 5 to 7 PM
10 Nash Place, Burlington
5-6 pm view installation
6-7 pm discussion and food
Randall Szott and Selene Colburn explore nothingness, somethingness, ephemerality, and what constitutes the presence or the absence of a book, work, idea, sound, etc. Colburn and Szott met while serving in the Vermont legislature and have continued to collaborate on creative practices and projects.
Randall Szott will share nothing. Or rather, he will share his ongoing, twenty plus year collection of nothing. Many of the items (or lack thereof) could be characterized as a form of “folk conceptualism” which sits adjacent to a long history of art practices that explore the paradoxes of nothing. Randall is a former: chef, merchant mariner, public library director, state legislator, and town administrator. He now works in economic development and when he is feeling somewhat pretentious, which is quite often, he calls his field “public culture.” He mostly considers himself a writer that doesn’t write and an artist that doesn’t make art. Despite this, he has widely published, curated and exhibited. He has also presented at universities, museums, and conferences across the U.S.
Selene Colburn will show the two hundred plus volumes of the second edition of The Plural Nouns of February, an artist book that jumps between written and performance forms and that draws on an archive of notes, scripts, scores, and video documentation. Attendees will be invited to select a volume to take home, thus dispersing the book in all directions and enacting the immediate dismantling of any wholeness The Plural Nouns of February once held. Selene is a writer, book maker, choreographer, and community organizer whose work has appeared in literary journals, zine fairs, performance venues, galleries and art fairs, and the professional literature of library and archival science. She explores hybrid forms and unfixed genres and activates intersections between writing, performance, and artifact.
*The installation and conversation will take place in a house. Some stairs are involved.*
*There is no parking available on Nash Place, though nearby parking is available on Colchester Avenue and in lots maintained by UVM (which are typically unticketed on weekends) next to Kampus Kitchen and on the Trinity campus.*
