Voices in Stone features the ancient art of Chinese seal carving reinterpreted into an exploration of cross-cultural connections between China and the US. By combining Eastern and Western symbols and phrases into the seals and their accompanying artwork, artist Anping Liu invites us to reflect on cultural exchange and influence as he approaches the fortieth anniversary of his arrival to the US.

The exhibit is on view September 18-November 16, whenever the New York Folklore Shop and Gallery are open.
New York Folklore is located at 129 Jay Street, Schenectady, on the Jay Street Marketplace pedestrian mall.
The gallery is wheelchair accessible with a foldout ramp, and has an accessible restroom. Seating in the gallery is available.
The gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 10AM to 4PM, and Sundays 10AM to 2PM.

About the Artist
Dr. Anping Liu was born into a family in China that valued traditional culture. From a young age, he showed a strong interest in art, often reading and drawing at home.
In 1985, Anping came to the United States as a graduate student. After earning a Ph.D. in economics, he moved to New York State and worked in state government for many years. After his children grew up and left home, he returned to his artistic passions, studying Chinese painting, calligraphy, and poetry under the guidance of a longtime friend, Professor Lefu Gu, an accomplished painter and visiting professor at Union College and College of Saint Rose.
Over the past decade, Dr. Liu has immersed himself in the four pillars of Chinese literati art: painting, poetry, calligraphy, and seal carving. He has carved around 50 traditional seals, some of which are included in his work samples.
An active member of the Chinese Community Center (CCC), Dr. Liu volunteers to create and display Chinese paintings and calligraphy during major festivals and visits local public schools to demonstrate Chinese art. He has taught painting to both children and adults.
Funding is provided for this exhibit by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and Schenectady County Initiative Program.
