“Voices: A Folk Opera” tells the story of Belle, a fictional character loosely based on the real life of Kathryn Belle Long.
Belle’s voice is guided by the voices of her grandmothers, and in the end, she learns that while life on earth is temporary, the love and art you give the world live on forever.
“Voices: A Folk Opera” is about family lineage, tradition, coming of age, political revolution, and love — but perhaps its most enduring theme is that of hope — hope that we leave the world a little better than we found it.
There was a tragic and almost unfathomable reality to writing, recording, and eventually releasing this album. In November 2022, just weeks before we planned on finishing the recording, Kathryn was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She passed six months later. In the story, our protagonist does not make it to the end of the Folk Opera. Kathryn wrote all this before she knew she was sick — almost as if she knew.
This was supposed to be the first project like this that Kathryn and I created together, you know, just the beginning. But now it’s her last piece of art to share with the world, and I know it will make the world a better place.
