About this Event

The Vital Perspectives on Healthcare and Science series returns for an exciting November event.

This series engages with some of the most pressing public health issues of our time, in a regular public forum catalyzed by a book.

The November event features Nathan Gray, MD, an Assistant Professor of Palliative Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, whose new book, The Human Remains: Drawing Out Compassion in Medicine perfectly captures the spirit of the Vital Perspectives event series. This is a remarkable graphic memoir tracing Gray's path from an anxious student with a scalpel to an exhausted resident to a physician able to sit with his patients' suffering. It's all about about what medical training takes and what it might give back.

Dr. Soha Bayoumi will join Dr. Gray in conversation. This event is open to the public, and we encourage you to come join in!

Nathan Gray, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Palliative Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Gray has been a part of the expansion of palliative services for Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center's Thoracic Oncology Clinic and now serves as associate medical director for outpatient Palliative Care at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He sees patients in both the hospital and clinic setting. Dr. Gray's scholarly work examines the role of palliative care in serving vulnerable patient populations as well as the intersection of medicine and humanities. He is specifically interested in the power of graphic art to enhance communication in medicine. He is an award-winning comic artist, and his graphic work has been featured in the Washington Post, British Medical Journal, and Los Angeles Times, along with other outlets.

Dr. Soha Bayoumi is a Teaching Professor in the Medicine, Science, and the Humanities program. Trained in political theory, political philosophy and intellectual history, she works on the question of justice at the intersection of history, political theory, and science, technology and medicine studies. With a focus on medicine and public health, her research addresses the questions of health and social justice, biomedical ethics, and the medicine-politics nexus, with a geographical focus on the Middle East and a special interest in postcolonial and gender studies. Her research interests focus on medical expertise and how it is deployed in different political contexts. In this framework, she focuses on gender and race as important contributors to the fashioning of the medical profession and as key determinants of health and access to medical care. She has taught courses including “Graphic! Visualizing Medicine from Textbooks to Comics,” and “Visual Cultures of Medicine, Science, and Technology.” A board member of the Graphic Medicine International Collective (GMIC), she co-organized the 2026 GMIC conference in Baltimore.
