Due to limited space (12 people), this is a SJRA Members Only Event.
Sue Killeen is taking us to the Jekyll Island Banding Station (JIBS), which has been operating on Jekyll Island on the southeastern Georgia coast for more than 40 years!
Note: There is a $10 entrance fee to get on to Jekyll Island as it is a Georgia State Park.
It is the closest banding station to us in Northeast Florida, and one of the few that welcome visitors. JIBS is a volunteer-run bird research station on the south end of Jekyll Island that captures and bands migratory birds during the fall migration season. They are supported by the non-profit called Georgia Bird Observatory that helps with fund raising.
Note: There is also $10 fee for this trip that will be your donation to the JIBS, so bring cash for your donation!
The trail to the station starts at the corner of Macy Lane and St Andrews Way. There is limited parking so we will meet at the St. Andrews Picnic Area parking lot and carpool to the trailhead.
Once we are at the station you can decide whether or not they go on net runs or just sit at the station. They typically have station operators going in 3 different directions with no more than 6 people so we may need to rotate. Charlie Muise will be in charge when we visit. He has conducted radio telemetry studies of Loggerhead Shrikes, studied migrating Northern Saw-Whet Owls in Georgia and assisted with several other projects. He has been assisting at JIBS since 2006.
We will bird around and have a picnic lunch at the St. Andrews Picnic Area. Afterwards we will stop at the Amphitheatre Pond and see what is hanging out there. Watch for Night Herons and Spoonbills. And lastly, we will stop at the Welcome Center on the way out for birds or whatever.
We recommend that you bring the following:
water, food, hat, sunscreen, bug spray, binoculars, folding chair (they have some, but not more than 5) and two $10 bills for your donation and entrance fee.
Note: Since this event starts at 8:00 AM, you may want to travel to Jekyll Island the night before!
