"Research-Creation and the Alchemical Studio: An Experiment in Studious Drift"
Join us for a talk by Dr. Tyson E. Lewis, Professor Art Education at the University of North Texas. His presentation creates a dialectical image in which the ancient practice of alchemy is juxtaposed next to the contemporary practice of research-creation. The mediation point between the two is the unusual space-time of the studio, which embodies an underlying drift in bodies, gestures, materials, and ideas that unites alchemical experimentation and research-creation. Dr. Lewis will highlight the importance of this convergence for interrupting and suspending dominant notions of learning prevalent in today’s schools and universities.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Tyson E. Lewis is a Professor Art Education in the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas. He has published widely on topics such as research-creation, critical pedagogy, critical phenomenology, aesthetic philosophy, critical theory, posthumanism, and antifascist education. In 2024, Dr. Lewis was included on the Stanford University/Elsevier list for the world’s Top 2% most-cited researchers in the world. He is author of many books, including Studious Drift: Movements and Protocols for a Postdigital Education and The Alchemy of Research-Creation, both co-authored with Peter Hyland.
