The Vienna City Marathon is a major road-running event in Vienna, Austria, combining athletic competition with the city’s celebrated musical and cultural identity. The marathon covers the classic 42.195-kilometre distance and is presented as a European Marathon Classics event, an Elite Label Event, and part of the World Athletics Global Calendar. Its course showcases famous Vienna landmarks and culminates in a finish in the heart of the city. More than 60 cheering zones provide encouragement along the route, while music and performance contribute to the distinctive atmosphere. Members of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and participating runners appear together at the Vienna Musikverein, reinforcing the event’s connection between sport and culture. The event programme extends beyond the main marathon and includes the Wiener Städtische Half Marathon, Powerade Relay Marathon, Vienna 10K, Vienna 5K, children’s races, The Daily Mile 800 and 1600, the Princesses and Princes Run, and the Coca-Cola Inclusion Run. The relay generally consists of four runners, with timing managed through a shared transponder passed between team members. The inclusion and youngest-participant events take place without timekeeping, while selected shorter races allow participants to choose whether to receive an official time and ranking. Marathon and half-marathon results use RFID-enabled race numbers, with net and gross times displayed and non-elite rankings based on net time. Official pacemakers and finish-support runners help participants pursue target times and complete the course confidently.
The marathon experience includes a finisher medal, split timing, refreshments, live results, course tracking, public-transport access associated with race participation, and support from approximately 2,500 volunteers. Eight principal refreshment stations provide water and Powerade, with bananas available later in the course, alongside additional water points and finish refreshments. Participants can also access health and safety services, including medical support from the Wiener Städtische Running Docs. The accompanying Vienna Sports World expo at MARX HALLE features approximately 100 exhibitors and brands, with opportunities for visitors and accompanying persons to explore running-related products and services. A complimentary health check is available at the expo for participants seeking reassurance before racing.
The programme also offers guided training opportunities, training plans, sponsor and partner benefits, preparation runs, and connections with a wider running community in Austria. Optional cultural and social experiences include a Concert for the Marathon and an After Race Party. Medal personalisation services are available for eligible races, while an iTAB option allows runners to add a custom plate bearing their name and time. The Vienna City Marathon welcomes an international audience, including participants and supporters from Austria and Pakistan, and presents a broad, inclusive celebration of running, music, community, and Vienna’s cultural heritage.
