About this Event

Duration: 2 days
Location: Houston, TX

Target audience

Facility technicians, electricians, service engineers and anyone who is interested in working with VFDs and require an entry level class.

Learning objective

At the completion of this 2 day VFD fundamentals course, students will be able to understand the hardware components making up an AC PWM VFD, the safety hazards involved, basic troubleshooting and the approaches for setting up basic motor starting applications.

Abstract

PWM VFDs are unique electrical devices that utilize high speed switching technologies and power electronics that require a unique skill set in order to successfully apply and troubleshoot this type of motor starting. Understanding the VFD hardware topology, motor impact and load response is crucial to successful motor starting. Knowing how to program VFD I/O functions is essential for coordinating specified controls within any application. Above all, knowing how to work with VFDs safely is paramount if any work / troubleshooting is to be performed. Real world lab applications are used to conceptualize the topics and familiarize the individual with how VFDs actually respond and how the VFD and motor should be installed, programmed and tested. Additionally, practical and safe approaches for troubleshooting are covered in addition to understanding fault data.

Class topics:
  • VFD Safety considerations.
  • PWM technology, power electronics and the fundamentals of power converters / inverters.
  • Power wiring and motor installation requirements.
  • Controls - physical wiring and programming of VFD I/O points.
  • Fundamentals of VFD motor starting and basic parameter setup and tuning.
  • Safe methods of powering and testing VFDs and repair options.
