Meet Two Distinguished Guests!
Save the date! Challenger Learning Center of Maine and the Cole Land Transportation Museum are teaming up for a special homeschool experience on Tuesday, November 3rd.
Join us for a unique opportunity to meet two distinguished guests with remarkable careers in aviation, military service, and space exploration: William “Bill” Readdy, a former NASA astronaut and U.S. Navy veteran, and Capt. Colleen Nevius, a trailblazing former Navy pilot and test pilot.
Meet William “Bill” Readdy
Bill Readdy is a former NASA astronaut, U.S. Navy veteran, and test pilot who flew on three Space Shuttle missions: STS-42, STS-51, and STS-79. Over the course of his spaceflight career, he spent more than 672 hours in space and went on to serve in a variety of NASA leadership and flight roles.
Hear firsthand stories from his experiences as an astronaut, his work at NASA, and what it takes to pursue a career in aviation and space exploration.
Meet Capt. Colleen Nevius
Capt. Colleen Nevius made history throughout her career in the U.S. Navy. After graduating from Purdue University and receiving her commission in 1977, she earned her naval aviator wings in 1979. She became one of the first women assigned to the sea-duty component of Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 6, flying helicopter missions that supported ships at sea.
In 1983, Nevius became the first woman to graduate from the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School at Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland. She later helped establish a Vertical Onboard Delivery squadron before retiring from active duty in 1988.
Her career offers a powerful example of breaking barriers, pursuing ambitious goals, and opening doors for those who follow. Students will have the opportunity to hear from a pioneer in naval aviation and learn about a career that helped expand opportunities for women in the military.
An Opportunity to Ask Questions and Explore
This month’s homeschool event is a little different from the others in our fall series. Rather than a morning filled with hands-on STEM activities, Veterans of STEM gives homeschool students and families the chance to hear directly from people with extraordinary experiences in aviation, military service, and space exploration.
Come ready to be curious! This is a great opportunity to hear their stories, learn about their careers, and ask a question or two during our special virtual interview.
And there’s plenty more to explore. Following the program, participants will have the opportunity to take in the sights of the Cole Land Transportation Museum, home to an extensive collection of vehicles, equipment, and exhibits celebrating Maine’s transportation and military history.
Participants can also connect with a museum veteran volunteer, create Veterans Day cards, and explore military artifacts and memorials throughout the museum.
Please note: Unlike the other events in our fall homeschool series with the Cole Land Transportation Museum, this entire event will take place at the Cole Museum. There will be no separate stop at the Challenger Learning Center of Maine. Our featured guests will participate remotely via Zoom.
Come meet two remarkable guests virtually, discover what it takes to pursue a career in aviation and space exploration, and spend some time exploring one of Bangor’s unique museums!
Cost: Free!
Age recommendation: Great for the whole family, but best suited for students in 2nd grade and up.
