Stewards of the land or here to feed the nation? Exploring the role of farmers and the British countryside in today’s big challenges.
This year we experienced record-breaking rates of rainfall, alongside a summer of unprecedented temperatures as extreme weather becomes increasingly difficult to ignore.
Fuel prices steadily increase putting pressure on food production and there’s growing political uncertainty having an impact of the cost and availability of food. And while the global population continues to rise, wildlife populations decline at a rapid rate.
Approximately 70% of the UK’s land is used for agriculture, and the global food system contributes 1/3 of global emissions.
So what is the role of farmers and the British countryside in today’s big challenges? Award-winning director James Dawson’s new documentary film Derek vs Derek is set in the rolling hills of Devon, telling the story of two neighbouring farmers who share the same name but take radically different approaches to land use.
In equal parts hilarious and moving, the film shines a light on the vital debate surrounding the future of rural Britain.
Following the screening, we’ll continue the conversation with a panel discussion exploring the role of farming and the countryside in responding to some of the biggest challenges we face.
Join us for the film, stay for the conversation, and bring your own perspective to the debate. Tickets are free, but booking is required. Reserve your place.
