Conceptualised through the Kinyarwanda proverb "Usubiye inyuma, amenya aho yavuye" ("By looking back, one learns where they came from"), this interactive workshop and lecture aims to retrieve knowledge from our ancestral archive to build a liberated future.
The narrative that queerness is "un-African" is one of colonialism’s most harmful tools. To dismantle it, we must turn our gaze backward and recover the truths that colonial powers attempted to erase and rewrite. Divine Ishimwe and Anton Yashin deconstruct both the historical roots and contemporary mechanisms of colonial queerphobia, exposing how stigmatisation continues to adapt through modern political and legal tools.
Moving beyond colonial disruption, we center pre-colonial African histories of gender and sexual diversity alongside modern legislative victories and decriminalization efforts across the continent. By recovering our past, we can reclaim our present.
As a part of Tender Loving Queer’s “Blackness and sexuality” series, this event is a contribution to Afro-Swedish Culture and History Week arranged by Panafrican Movement for Justice (Afrosvenskarnas Forum för Rättvisa, AFR). Aligning with this year’s dedicated theme (Sankofa), by grounding ourselves in ancestral wisdom and decolonial critique, we honor where we come from to transform where we are going.
Following the workshop, we invite you to conclude the week with the final screenings of the Ubuntu Film Festival (starting at 14:00 at Panora).
At 16:00, join us for a screening of Black Burns Fast (2026), the vibrant Black queer coming-of-age story by South African director Sandulela Asanda. The screening will be followed by a conversation facilitated by Tender Loving Queer. Together, we will explore the importance of telling queer stories that extend beyond narratives of pain. We would like to celebrate together with you, stories that are multidimensional, full, and expansive, reflecting a human experience rich with joy, discovery, and self-realization.
