Some musicians play the sitar. Ustad Shujaat Khan makes it sing.Son and disciple of the legendary Ustad Vilayat Khan, and heir to the Imdadkhani gharana, he has carried one of Hindustani music’s great lineages to the Royal Albert Hall and concert halls around the world. A child prodigy who was performing by the age of six, he plays in the gayaki ang, the singing style of sitar, and often sings as he plays: classical, ghazal and folk, in one unbroken breath.
His collaboration The Rain, with Kayhan Kalhor and the ensemble Ghazal, earned a Grammy nomination. More than 60 albums later, he remains one of the most sought-after voices of Indian classical music, for listeners who come not just to hear a concert, but to feel it.
We are honoured to announce him as the first artist on Day Two of the Mehfil-e-Samaa.
