Upcycle a quilt into a beautiful, one-of-a-kind jacket or house coat!
This workshop is the perfect intro to sewing wearables! The pattern is simple and because it's a jacket, there's room for error if your seam allowance isn't perfect. Although you can absolutely jump right in using a vintage handmade quilt, you can also begin with a wool throw blanket or an inexpensive store-bought quilted coverlet so you can relax and enjoy the learning process on your first one. (Please note: absolutely NO stretch fabrics!) We provide the pattern and it is yours to keep, so you can make as many as you please after attending :)
Although this workshop is great for those who are new to sewing garments, attendees should feel confident with general sewing and operating the machine. Those who have attended our "Intro to Sewing" and have maintained their skills with practice have the requisite skills.
Skills gained from this workshop:
•pattern layout & cutting
•basic garment construction
•surface pockets
•double-fold bias
•button holes
•buttons
Materials Required:
There are several options for this workshop, but they'll all require a small quilt's worth of fabric (throw size or larger)
Options:
1. A "Cutter" Quilt - This is a handmade quilt that is often worn or stained in spots and therefore best for ucycling into a new project
2. A Kantha Quilt - A blanket made from various pieces of textiles using a simple visible running stitch
3. Inexpensive Quilted Coverlet - These often come in reversible prints and colors
4. Pre-Quilted Fabric - You can find these fabrics at various fabric stores
5. Quilt-Your-Own - Layer two fabrics or make a quilt top and sandwich and have them quilted before class
Additional Materials:
•1/2" Double-Fold Bias Tape: a 3-yd pack should be enough (you may be able to source this right from the quilt/coverlet)
•6-8 buttons (if you want them)
Use the sizing guide in the pictures to let us know which size pattern you would like us to print. Please note that the pattern shows FINISHED size and CM. You can find a little sweater or jacket that has a fit you like, measure it, convert the measurements to CM and choose a size that is comparable.
