Rachel Schwaller will discuss the research behind the recent exhibit . This talk will feature a local history of Lawrence using a unique mix of present-day ethnography and archival research from 1870 – 1920. This mixed methodology seeks to understand how “settlement” has been, and continues to be, defined in Lawrence. “Unsettled Lawrence” takes seriously the myriad forms of living in Lawrence, specifically by unhoused and encamped people, recognizing that all settlement produces built environments and culturally dynamic realities that were and are pivotal in the growth of Lawrence.
Rachel Schwaller is a multi-term lecturer in the departments of History and Religious at the University of Kansas.
