Across Kentucky’s higher education institutions, campus workers are training the next generation of the workforce, conducting groundbreaking research, and giving students a quality education. Since 2008, state funding for public higher education in Kentucky has continued to decline, and in fiscal year 2027 it is 37% lower than before the Great Recession, in inflation-adjusted terms. In 2026, the General Assembly passed a budget that cuts funding for higher education by 9.6% between 2026 and 2028. The result has been worse working conditions for faculty and staff, along with declining learning conditions for our students.United Campus Workers of Kentucky, the statewide higher education union, has been organizing on campus and in Frankfort for better working conditions for all campus workers. This fall, we partnered with the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy (KyPolicy) to conduct a statewide survey of higher education workers to better understand the growing crisis in employee retention and compensation across Kentucky’s public universities and community colleges.
More than 1,300 faculty and staff completed the survey, documenting how the General Assembly’s longstanding failure to adequately fund the state’s universities and community colleges has resulted in students carrying more of the cost burden, stagnant wages and higher workloads for faculty and staff, and poorer student and research outcomes.
Join us on December 11th to hear from workers about how recent legislation, state funding cuts, and corporate-style administrative leadership changes are affecting campus workers, and about our plan to fight for higher education as a public good.
