Panel discussion exploring the role of memory, acknowledgement and repair in addressing the enduring legacies of transatlantic enslavement.
About this Event

Over the last decade, activism and research have highlighted how histories, legacies and afterlives of enslavement remain embedded in institutions, communities and global inequalities. The University of Cambridge and its colleges are some of these institutions. Drawing on current debates about historical responsibility, this panel discussion will consider how understanding the past can help inform responses to present-day challenges.
The event will build on the University of Cambridge’s 'Legacies of Enslavement' project, which supports research and public engagement exploring the histories, legacies, and afterlives of enslavement, as well as the ways in which these histories continue to shape institutions, communities, and global inequalities today.

Speakers

Professor Pedro Ramos Pinto is an historian and convenor of the University of Cambridge’s 'Legacies of Enslavement' Initiative. His research explores how inequalities have been made and unnamed through time, and he has a long-standing interest in the practice of reparative history.
