About this Event

Understanding Behaviour: A Positive Approach for Parents and Carers

Do you sometimes find yourself asking:

  • "Why is my child behaving like this?"
  • "What are they trying to tell me?"
  • "Am I responding in the right way?"
  • "How can I understand them better?"

This workshop introduces parents and carers to the principles of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), a compassionate approach that helps us understand behaviour through curiosity, empathy and connection.

Rather than focusing on controlling behaviour, we'll explore what behaviour can tell us about a child's needs, emotions and experiences.

What we'll cover

During this workshop we will explore:

  • What behaviour is and why everyone uses behaviour to get their needs met.
  • The idea that behaviour is a form of communication.
  • Common reasons why behaviour occurs.
  • How relationships and environments can influence behaviour.
  • The importance of choice, communication and predictability.
  • Positive approaches that focus on understanding rather than punishment.
  • How improving wellbeing and quality of life can support positive outcomes.

Who is this for?

This workshop is suitable for:

  • Parents
  • Carers
  • Foster carers
  • Kinship carers
  • Grandparents and other family members

No previous knowledge is required.

What this workshop is not

To ensure expectations are clear, this session provides general information and education only.

The workshop does not provide:

  • Individual advice about your child.
  • Behaviour assessments.
  • Personalised behaviour plans.
  • Specific behaviour management strategies.
  • Clinical, therapeutic or diagnostic advice.

Every child, young person and family is unique. The purpose of this workshop is to help you develop a broader understanding of behaviour and the principles that sit behind positive approaches to support.

What you'll leave with

By the end of the session, you will have:

  • A better understanding of why behaviour happens.
  • Greater confidence in looking beyond the behaviour itself.
  • An introduction to Positive Behaviour Support principles.
  • A fresh perspective on supporting children through understanding, connection and positive relationships.
