The DMO's fall concert brims with complicated themes and layers to explore. Shostakovich's controversial Symphony No. 5 - is it patriotism or is it dissidence? Triumphant on the surface but troubled underneath, it hides its true meaning in plain sight. The overture to The Bartered Bride by Smetana offers light-hearted sparkle and folksy joy, but previews a comic opera in which nothing is quite what it seems. And Mozart's Concerto No. 24 in C minor is one of only two piano concertos he composed in a minor key; its expected gracefulness pairs with dark drama, perhaps never quite resolving. We are especially thrilled to welcome Ieva Jokubaviciute as soloist for the Mozart piano concerto. Described by the New York Times as “an artist of commanding technique, refined temperament and persuasive insight,” she is uniquely equipped to reveal everything this concerto holds beneath its polished surface.
We hope you'll join us for this intense, and intensely beautiful, program on Sunday, Dec 6 at 3:00pm in Baldwin Auditorium on Duke's East Campus. Admission is free to all, with no tickets required.
