Under the Influence(r): How Influencer Marketing Can Leave Us Vulnerable
Influencers are everywhere, shaping what we buy, how we look, what we eat and even how we think about ourselves. But while influencer marketing is often treated as just another form of advertising, the relationships we form with influencers can make their influence particularly powerful, and sometimes harmful. I’ll share research from Adelaide University exploring how influencer marketing can contribute to experiences of consumer vulnerability, including psychological, social, financial and physical harms. I’ll also look at why we can’t simply put the responsibility on consumers to make better choices, and what influencers, brands and platforms could do differently.
Your Speaker: Dr Amelie Burgess
Dr Amelie Burgess is a Senior Lecturer in Marketing at Adelaide University. Her research explores some of the messier sides of modern marketing, from how brands represent diversity and inclusion to the growing influence of social media, algorithms and AI on consumers. She is particularly interested in who benefits, who might be harmed, and what happens when marketing, technology and our everyday lives increasingly collide.
