Darcy Maulsby, Iowa's Storyteller, will present "Uncover the Secret History of the KKK in Iowa" in the 3rd Floor Auditorium at Carnegie-Stout Public Library in Dubuque at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 15, 2026. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event.White hoods and robes. Cross burnings. Parades of Ku Klux Klan members on the streets and fairgrounds of Iowa's small towns and cities. It all seems improbable—and yet it happened repeatedly in countless rural and urban communities across Iowa in the mid-1920s. While much of this history is shrouded in mystery, and some has been lost, a surprising number of stories, photos and news clippings still exist, when you know where to look. This powerful program takes you back in time to better understand why the "second coming" of the KKK occurred at this point in American history, how the secretive group gained traction in Dubuque and Iowa prior to the Great Depression, and what this history means for us today.
Darcy Maulsby is an author, journalist, and 5th-generation Iowa farmer. She earned her journalism/communication degree and master's degree in business administration from Iowa State University, and has run her own marketing/communications company, Darcy Maulsby & Company, full time since 2002. Darcy has written several books, including "Culinary History of Iowa," "Classic Restaurants of Des Moines and Their Recipes," and "Dallas County, Iowa Agriculture: A History of Farming, Family and Food."
