Gavel Club volunteers support engaging public-speaking and leadership sessions for youth ages 8–18. Volunteers may assist with either in-person or virtual sessions, helping participants practise prepared speeches, impromptu speaking, active listening, constructive feedback, and meeting roles in a welcoming environment.
Responsibilities may include:
-Supporting facilitators with session preparation and delivery
-Welcoming participants and encouraging active involvement
-Helping youth prepare speeches, presentations, and meeting roles
-Leading icebreakers, discussions, speaking activities, or games
-Providing respectful and age-appropriate feedback
-Supporting small-group or one-on-one speaking practice
-Assisting with attendance, session materials, and basic administrative tasks
-Setting up and organizing materials for in-person sessions
-Supporting breakout rooms, screen sharing, chat moderation, or other online features during virtual sessions
-Communicating attendance concerns, technical issues, or participant needs to the program facilitator
-Representing U+ Community professionally and following all program guidelines


Ideal candidates will:
-Strong verbal communication and active-listening skills
-Interest in public speaking, leadership, education, or youth development
-Friendly, patient, encouraging, and comfortable working with youth
-Able to give constructive feedback in a positive and respectful manner
-Reliable, punctual, organized, and able to follow instructions
-Comfortable speaking in front of individuals or small groups
-Able to work collaboratively with facilitators and other volunteers
-Basic proficiency with Zoom, Google Meet, or similar platforms for virtual sessions
-Previous experience in public speaking, Toastmasters, tutoring, mentoring, facilitation, camps, or youth programs is an asset but not required
-Access to a reliable device, internet connection, microphone, and camera is required for virtual volunteering
