In 2021, Professor Niki Harré (Psychology, Auckland University) tried an experiment. During her research leave, she established a year-long identity as a "secular priest". Drawn to some aspects of religious practice, she is nevertheless a lifelong atheist, and the experiment probed what secular people could usefully learn from religion. The results are reported in her recent book, 'The Calling' (AUP, 2026)
This event sees Professor Harré in appreciative dialogue with Anglican vicar, Rev. Dr. Tim McKenzie. How much common ground do they have? And do their differences matter?
