Lettermen of the USA (LotUSA), a national non-profit organization, is proud to announce its 4th Annual “Turkeys for Heroes” event set for Thursday, November 18, 2026 at Empower Cafe. Last year volunteers prepared and delivered 350 Thanksgiving meals to veterans in need across central and northeast Alabama. We hope to exceed that amount for 2026!
This heartfelt effort is led by Darryl Fuhrman, President and Founder of Lettermen of the USA, and made possible through the generosity of dedicated volunteers and donors.
In 2025, WWII Alabama Veteran Bo Carwyle who is 99 years old delivered a Thanksgiving meal to another WWII Veteran that was displaced due to a retirement home fire. This year we will have veterans and former college and NFL football players return to serve others.
Thanksgiving meals will be prepared by volunteers. Last year, David “Hoss” Johnson, former University of Alabama football player, generously volunteered to smoke 100 pounds of turkey breast for the occasion. The traditional sides — green bean casserole, cornbread dressing, gravy, and cranberry sauce — were prepared by Chef Gary Jones of Empower Cafe and Workshops Empowerment, Inc. In addition, U.S. Veteran Chef Jason Mullenix, who graciously volunteered his time for the previous years, will once again assist in the meal preparation.
Location for cooking and meal assembly: Empower Cafe at 4244 3rd Avenue South. Bham, AL 35222.
Times will soon be announced for assembling plates for delivery and loading vehicles to deliver the meals directly to veterans.
